What would happen if we all took responsibility for making a happy workplace? I’m putting the question out there as a general thought starter? I’m optimistic some of my readers will pick up this idea and share it.
Here’s my super simple tips to get started for Happy Workplace.
Number 1 – Don’t forget to show appreciation.
This is the most simple and most effective way to build trust and rapport at work. We all like to know that we are appreciated for who we are and what we do.
- A smile and a thankyou takes just a minute.
- give the gift of a compliment.
- make someone a coffee to thank them for something they did – even if it was part of their role.
Number 2 – Celebrate Your Differences.
Differences build strength in a team, new perspectives, different skills and attitudes give a workplace a broader base to operate from and make it attractive to a wider client base. But if we aren’t careful differences can become a source of frustration.
- Take time to recognise what the difference is – what are your values and attitudes, what are the other persons?
- Check your assumptions – the fact you are different is not the same as assuming why and how the differences are caused or operate. Talk openly and encourage awareness of the basis of the difference.
- Find the strength in the different ways of knowing, doing or being.
- Use your self awareness, maturity and good humour to celebrate difference.
Number 3 – Skip fault finding
Maybe its human nature to focus on the things that people get wrong, rather than the things they do right. Unfortunately, when you are in the mode of fault-finding that is what you will see more and more of and miss the things people do well!
Instead, focus on the behaviour, the results you like and encourage growth of these, the law of attraction means you are setting yourself up to bring forth the best in the other … not the worst, which is what you do when you focus on faults. If something needs correction point out the positive alternative and don’t make the problem the only story heard by the other person.
